ABSTRACT
Background: The COVID-19 is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Since its advent, efforts have been put in place to mitigate its spread such as NPI and development of vaccines. It has caused over 6 million deaths globally accounting for over 1.4 million infected health care workers.
Objectives: The study was carried out to assess the level of uptake of COVID-19 vaccination among health care workers in Benin City, Edo State in order to improve vaccine uptake.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out amongst 820 respondents’ selected using multistage sampling technique. Pre-tested self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. Data was screened for completeness, entered and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.0 software and quantitative variables were expressed as frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The level of significant was set at p < 0.050.
Results: A total of 822 respondents participated in this study. The mean age (SD) of respondents was 30 (6.9) years. Four hundred and sixty one (56.1%) had overall good knowledge of COVID-19 vaccination. Seven hundred and eighty-one (95.0%) of respondents had positive attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination. Seven hundred and sixty eight (93.4%) respondents were willing to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Five Hundred and forty two (65.9) respondents had taken the vaccine and knowledge of COVID-19 vaccination (OR = 1.749, CI = 0.539-1.041, p-value = 0.085), attitude (OR = 1.749, CI = 0.050-0.362, p-value < 0.001) and willingness (OR =1.063, CI = 0.025-0.155, p<0.001) were found to be positively correlated with the level of uptake of COVID-19 vaccination.
