ABSTRACT
The research examines community participation in rural development projects in Agbarha, Community Ughelli North LGA Delta State, Nigeria. Survey design method, which employs the instrument of questionnaire, was adopted. The data was subjected to careful descriptive analytical technique to understand both the nature of the data and relationship that exist among the various variables of interest. The goal of the research was actualized through the following objectives: examine the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in relation to participatory awareness on rural development projects; characterize the types of community development projects in the study area; identify the forms and levels of participation of the rural community in development projects: Identify key problems the community face during planning and implementation of rural projects; examines measures for improving participation in rural development projects. The outcome of the result shows that socio-demographic profile of the respondents tends to have a direct bearing on how some of them perceived the importance of community participation in rural development projects. it was observed that diverse rural projects had been carried out in the area of which majority of the peopled participated. The research revealed that though majority of the people had no prior training on the issue of rural development projects, however tend to have certain level of awareness which they have gather by way of educational exposure. Thus, forms of community participation were observed to centered on town hall consultation, leadership opinion, and traditional ruler representation. It was also observed that most of the community projects were assessed to be on the average and poor. The research also observed certain problems faced by community members during planning and implementation stage which range from financial problem, divergent views on projects, low participation, failure on the part of the government to consult with the people and lack of awareness on the importance of community participation on rural development projects. The research identified some of the measures that can be employed to help improve community participation. Finally, community participation in rural development project is a veritable tool that can be used to enhance the quality of living standard of the rural dwellers.
