ABSTRACT

Child marriage which is the union between an older man and underaged girl is often positioned as a shield considered by families and communities as an option for protecting their girl child from hunger, rape and sexual violence, unwanted pregnancies before maturity. Homelessness and hunger were all reported by parents and children as genuine reason for child marriage in some localities. Weak legislative frameworks and enforcement, repugnant traditional practices, gender discrimination and lack of alternative opportunities for girls specifically education and poverty are all drivers of child marriage. This research also found in addition to the above mentioned that multiplicities of laws accounts for non-apprehension and prosecution of offenders thereby allowing them to hide under religion and cultural practices and continue to perpetrate crime against humanity. This project is an attempt to examine the child marriage regulatory framework in Nigeria with a view to proffering suggestions on bridging legislative gaps.
