ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases remain a public health concern. The objectives of this study were to determine the level of knowledge, risk factors, prevalence and risk status of cardiovascular diseases amongst adults in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State using a descriptive cross-sectional study design. Three hundred and forty adults were selected using random sampling technique. Instrument for data collection was the WHO STEPS wise structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 21.0 and level of significance was set at p<0.05. Univariate and bivariate analysis (Chi square test) was done. RESULTS: Most of the respondents [225 (75.8%)] had good knowledge of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Age (p=0.027), occupation (< 0.001), marital status (0.001), cigarette smoking (0.017) and duration of TV/computer (0.007) had significant association with knowledge of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. In addition, age (< 0.001, level of education (0.033), occupation (<0.001), marital status (<0.001), average monthly income (0.030), cigarette smoking(0.044), and knowledge of CVD risk factors (0.012) were significantly associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. The prevalence rate of cardiovascular diseases in this study was 10.3%. Cardiovascular risk status among respondents in this study was low (41.5%). CONCLUSION: Majority of the respondents had good knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors.
