ABSTRACT

The study assessed the use of audio-visual aids in the teaching-learning of Literature-in-English in public senior secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated and tested in the study. A total sample of 87 participants took part in the study. They were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The data for the study were collected through a Questionnaire titled: Audio-Visual Aids For Teaching-Learning LiteratureIn-English Questionnaire (AATLQ). After the validation of the instrument, it was pilot-tested for reliability which was determined through the Cronbach’s alpha procedure with a reliability coefficient of 0.75. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics involved the mean score analysis while the inferential statistics involved the Chi-square Statistic which was used to test the hypothesis formulated for the study. It was found in the study that there is a significant relationship between the use of audio-visual aids and students’ performance in Literature-in-English in public Senior Secondary Schools in Oredo local government area of Edo State; there is inadequate training of teachers on the use of audio-visual aids in Oredo local government area of Edo State; there is poor maintenance culture of audio-visual aids provided in public senior secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo State among others. The study therefore concludes that an audio-visual aid is critical to Students’ performance in Literature-in-English in Oredo local government area of Edo State. It was on the basis of this that the study recommended among others that the government should provide the relevant audio-visual aids and in adequate quantity across the senior secondary schools not only in Oredo local government area, but in the entire eighteen local government areas of Edo State and that, Literature-in-English teachers should be regularly trained and retrained in order to update their knowledge and skills on the use of audio-visual aids in Oredo local government area of Edo State.
