ABSTRACT

This study examined assessing the use of technology on the educational outcome of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area. To carry out this study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. The questions includes: 1. What educational technology resources are available in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state? 2. Are the technological materials utilized for teaching in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state? 3. What factors influences the use of technological materials in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state? 4. How does the use of technology influence educational outcomes in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state.

 

Thepopulation of the study consist of private and public secondary school teachers in Egor local government Area, Benin City, Edo State. With the adoption of simple random sampling techniques, a sample of 100 respondents were used for the study and were randomly selected from Adolor and Uselu public secondary schools, then from the private schools, Enina and Eagles group of school. A well structured questionnaire was administered after validation of instrument on a sample of 20 respondents for reliability and the data collected were analyzed through the use of frequency counts, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation.

Parallel to the research questions raised, the findings of the studyrevealed that educational technology resources plays a vital role in enhancing teaching and learning experiences in their schools. The respondents strongly agreed that there are available educational technologies in their schools and these technological materials are being utilized for teaching in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Although, research question 3 revealed that there are factors that influence the use of technological materials in Egor LGA. The findings disclosed that enormous numbers of respondents strongly agreed that these factors such as: 1. Frequent power outages or limited access to electricity disrupt the use of technological devices in school 2.Resistance or lack of confidence from students who are not familiar with using technology for learning is a problem to teachers when making use of technology in the classroom. 3. Constant upgrade of technology resulting to its complexity for teachers to make use of during teaching and learning activities, posses as a great barrier to the effective application of educational technology in secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Prior to the study’s findings the following recommendations were made, that there is need for Leverage educational software, apps, and platforms to support learning, such as interactive simulations, virtual labs, and multimedia presentations. Also, inevitably there is need for government to develop digital literacy teaching for students to effectively use technology for research. There is need for government to combine traditional teaching with online resources and activities to enhance engagement and understanding.
