ASSESSING THE USE OF AUDIO VISUAL MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

 This study was designed to identify the use of audio - visual materials in the teaching of social studies by in junior secondary schools of Egor Local government area of Edo State Nigeria. The research was carried out as a survey research using relevant literature from journals, magazines, books and the internet. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study.

  A random sampling technique was used in selection of 50 social studies teachers were randomly selected from junior secondary schools in Egor local government area. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using mean and simple percentage.              

 The result revealed that; Most of the teachers makes use of manual teaching aid like photographs, pictures, slides etc. except for some few who uses computer to teach social studies, Irregular power supply, class size, student’s attitude, lack of finance and lack of motivation form the school management are all constraints faced by teachers in the use of audio - visual aids, and the effective use of audio visual aids helps to foster better retention among students, helps to foster better explanation for the teachers, social studies lessons has become more realistic, it has saved time in the teaching process for the teachers and it encourages participation of students in the learning of social studies

  Based on the results, it was recommended that Education stakeholders in the country should finance provision of computers, power generator, Audio-Visual Aids, and expand teaching aids in all secondary schools. This will enhance the use of Audio-Visual aids in the teaching and learning of social studies, Based on the challenges teachers are facing in the use of audio visual aids, regular power supply or an alternative source of power should be provided for the schools, schools administrators should be a motivating force to drive teachers in the usage of teaching aids and most of these audio visual aids should be subsidized by the Government so that schools can afford them, All teachers should be trained on using Audio-Visual Aids to teach due to lack of computer skills. Also Ministry of Education and professional organizations like STAN should organize workshops, seminars and conferences for teachers especially on how to manage Audio-Visual Aids.
