Abstract
This study assessed the quality of playgrounds in pre-primary schools within the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Four(4) research questions guided the investigation, focusing on availability, adequacy, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of playgrounds. A descriptive survey method was employed, targeting teachers from pre-primary schools. A sample size of 90 respondents, consisting of teachers, was selected from the 150 registered pre-primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Using a simple balloting method, 15 pre-primary schools were chosen, and from each school, 6 subjects were selected through purposive sampling techniques, totaling 90 participants. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire incorporating a Likert scale and a direct observation checklist, which were combined to gather both quantitative and qualitative data on the playgrounds' conditions during school hours. Analysis involved frequency counts and percentages for the combined questionnaire and observation checklist data, providing comprehensive insights into the perceived and actual state of the playgrounds. Findings revealed that most pre-primary schools have playgrounds, but they often fall short of standard requirements and are inadequate. The study indicated that the quality of playgrounds directly influences pupils' play experiences and physical activity levels. Recommendations were made for improving playground quality, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance, safety measures, and increased accessibility to age-appropriate facilities in pre-primary schools within the Oredo Local Government Area
