ASSESSING THE NEW TREND IN HOME ECONOMICS STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN ENTREPRENEUR SKILLS IN OVIA NORTH-EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates new trend in home economics student performance in entrepreneur skills in Benin City, Edo State. The main purpose of this study is to specifically find out the impact of selected skills in home economics student performance in entrepreneur skills, challenges and possible solutions.

The design of the study was a survey research design. The population target of this study comprised of 250 students offering home economics in secondary and tertiary schools in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State. The research instruments used in gathering data was the questionnaire, which were administered to pupils and students. The instrument was validated by the research supervisor and two experts in the field of vocational and technical education. The reliability coefficient was established and found to be 0.621. Mean, standard deviation, percentages and t-test were used to analyze the research questions and hypotheses.

The findings reveals that student have some technical skills which can impact on their entrepreneur skills of development. It was also revealed that handiwork skills and good teamwork skills have good impact on home economics student performance in entrepreneur skills. It was found out that textile laboratoryresources did not meet the study needs of home economics student entrepreneur skills. There was no significant difference between technical, handiwork and teamwork skills on home economics student performance in entrepreneur skills (P<0.05). Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that government as a matter of policy must ensure that training programme are organized for Home Economics teachers by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEP) to equip them with the necessary entrepreneurial skills that can promote students’ performance in entrepreneur skills. It was also recommended that curriculum planners should spell out entrepreneurial activities for Home Economics classes, with respect to these selected entrepreneurial skills, among others.
