ABSTRACT
The study was based on ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE OF TORT LIABILITY AMONG PROPRIETORS OF FITNESS CENTERS AND MANAGERS IN BENIN CITY: IMPLICATIONS FOR CLIENTS INJURY PREVENTION AND RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES. A total of sixty respondents (60) respondents from among fitness center proprietors and managers in Benin City. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which was established by the researcher. The questionnaire was validated by two experts in the field of Human Kinetics and Sports Science. Both Descriptive and Inferential statistical method was used to collate, code, and analyze the completed copies of questionnaire. While Inferential statistics, such as chi-square tests and t-tests, was used to ascertain the relationships between knowledge of tort liability and practical risk management strategies, Descriptive statistics, such as, mean and standard deviation, was utilized to summarize the respondents’ knowledge levels.
To ensure the reliability of the study, a standardized data collection process was employed, and all instruments were pre-tested for consistency. Additionally, a pilot study was conducted to refine the survey tools, ensuring accuracy in responses. The reliability of the research instrument was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.68, indicating a high level of internal consistency.
The result from the research affirmed that the majority of fitness center owners in Benin City possess a low level of knowledge about their legal obligations under tort liability. Specifically, 63.3% of respondents exhibited limited awareness of their legal responsibilities. Overall, the findings highlight the need for improved knowledge and practices among fitness center owners in Benin City regarding tort liability to minimize legal risks and provide a safer environment for clients.
