ABSTRACT

The study assessed the impact of technology on the teaching and learning of history in Higher Education in University of Benin. To guide the study, four research questions were raised and answered using frequency counts, mean and standard deviation. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design while using the survey method. The population of the study was two hundred and five students in Education History, Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. A questionnaire titled: “Impact of Technology on Teaching and Learning of History Questionnaire (ITTLHQ)” which had two sections, A and B was used to elicit information for the study. Analyses were carried out using frequency counts, mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that the perceptions of the students on the use of technology in teaching and learning History was positive, there was a high extent on the use of technology in teaching and learning History in higher education, the adoption of technology affects the performance of the students in teaching and learning History and challenges were encountered in the use of technology in teaching and learning History. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the school authority should provide technological resources needed by students to use technologically oriented pedagogies for their lessons. For successful technology integration in History education, teachers need be sensitised on the different types of technologies that can be used to enhance the teaching of History.
