ABSTRACT
Quality of life assessment has been utilized over the years to assess the health conditions and effect on life of individuals with certain conditions. Quality of life assessment of health conditions has replaced the original system where patient conditions are health conditions are gauged based on mortality rate. Ocular allergies, which is highly prevalent is one major ocular condition that could possibly impact patients’ quality of life. To determine the impact of ocular allergies on the quality of life of University of Benin optometry students. This study was conducted using a structured questionnaire to survey 270 participants who are students of the University of Benin. Thequestionnaire assessed the impact of ocular allergies on various aspects of their lives. The study found a high prevalence of ocular allergies (70.4%), which had a significant impact on quality of life. The study's findings on the extent of this impact across year of study when compared to first year revealed a significant difference in year 2 (p = 0.118), year 3 (p = 0.012), year 4 (p = 0.001) and year 5 (p < 0.0001). However, there was no significant difference observed in year 6 compared to year 1 (p = 0.574). The study concludes that ocular allergies have a significant impact on quality of life of optometry study. This calls for targeted intervention and education to help mitigate it's prevalence, severity and impact on quality of life.
