ASSESSING THE HUMAN AND MATERIAL RESOURCES NEEDS FOR IMPLEMENTING ANIMAL HUSBANDRY CURRICULUM FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the human and material resources needs for implementing Animal husbandry curriculum for entrepreneurship in senior secondary schools in Edo State. The purpose was to assess the availability and adequacy of human and material resources in implementing Animal husbandry curriculum in secondary schools in Edo State and to establish a relationship between the available resources and their utilization in teaching Animal husbandry as trade/entrepreneurship subject in secondary schools. Eight (8) research questions guided the study and eight (8) hypotheses were tested. This study adopted ex-post facto research design using the survey method. The population of the study comprised of all Agricultural science teachers in public senior secondary schools in Edo State of which a sample of 194 were selected by multi-stage random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire titled: Assessment of Human and Material Resources For Implementing Animal Husbandry Curriculum for Entrepreneurship in Secondary Schools Questionnaire (AHMRIAHCESSQ) was used to collect data from respondents. The questionnaire was face validated by three lecturers two from Vocational Department (Agricultural Science Unit), Delta State University, one from the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Benin. Mean and standard deviation were used for the research questions while t-test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the human and material resources for the implementation of Animal husbandry curriculum in senior secondary schools in Edo State were inadequate when assessed based on NERDC Animal husbandry curriculum benchmark and ratings from teachers of Agricultural science. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the teachers were aware of the resources prescribed by NERDC for implementation of Animal husbandry curriculum in secondary schools, it was also concluded that the human and material resources for implementation of Animal husbandry curriculum in senior secondary schools in Edo State were inadequate when it was assessed based on NERDC standard of expected resources for implementing Animal husbandry curriculum at the senior secondary school level. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that adequate human and material resources such as qualified Animal husbandry teachers, farm managers, laboratory technicians, laboratory attendants, animal houses, live animals, equipment/tools, specimens for classroom instruction should be adequately provided and the challenges faced by Agricultural science teachers in the implementation of Animal husbandry curriculum in senior secondary schools in Edo State should be addressed by the schools administrators and stakeholders.
