ABSTRACT
This research work has attempted to examine an aspect of syntax and semantics in Edo language. The researcher is aimed at proving that certain semantics information are necessary for a good syntactic formation to be achieved in Edo language. There are certain verbs in Edo that can only occur with nominal elements that shares some semantics information (selectional restrictions), the study was divided into five chapters. Chapter one, is the chapter that contains the introduction, research methodology, purpose and significance of the study. Chapter two, focuses on the review of certain concepts, review of relevant literature on the concept of syntax and semantics, the chapter also discusses the concern of the current study. Chapter four presented data elicited from competent native speakers of Edo, overtly sentences were sample and analyzed, and the verbs were thoroughly analyzed based on their sub-categorization features, the study after thorough examination of the data discover that Edo has three types of valency which are monovalent, diavalent and trivalent verbs and there are also some verbs that are stative, i.e. identify some selection restriction of some Edo verbs.Chapter five, summarizes the findings of the study and conclusions, the investigation of the study “aspect of syntax and semantics in Edo language”, with a focus in Edo verb and the selective characteristics and sub-categorization strength of features.
