ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to make a study into how Artificial intelligence has radically changed the traditional functions of the court. This function can be categorized into two: administrative and judicial functions. In the aspect of administrative functions of the court, Artificial Intelligence has been most helpful when it comes to case filling: most court have e-filling system in place which saves time and cost. We also have e-reports with an inbuilt AI algorithm that helps judges, lawyers and students in legal research. Perhaps the most fascinating technology in the judiciary is the virtual hearing or smart courts. This technology allows litigants to prosecute their cases at the comfort of their homes. This also allows any member of the public to attend the court session. In the area of traditional judicial functions of the court, AI will serve as evidence before our court. This Evidence can be in three forms: as documentary evidence, exhibits and expert evidence. This study also looks at the legality debate surrounding the use of AI and related technology in Nigeria. It also looks at how the how Artificial Intelligence can serve as evidence before Nigerian court vis-à-vis the provision of the Evidence Act. It finally examines ethical and human right challenges which AI may pose to Nigerian Legal System. It then concludes by making recommendation.
