Abstract

This long essay critically examined Art and History in Odia Ofeimun's Nigeria the Beautiful : Poems for Dance Drama. In this essay the heart of the author is rendered honest to the people to educate them on the history of the Nation. The purpose of this essay is designed to show the nature of poetry as one that is capable of modelling communicating and totally unafraid of addressing issues in the society and to show how Art and history are interwoven in the text. The scope of the study is limited to Ofeimun's Nigeria the Beautiful Poems for Dance Drama and this study will show Nigeria as a society that has passed through a rigorous tortuous journey in history as perpetrated by the British imperialist. The methodology of this essay is the qualitative research method which is a strategy that usually emphasizes words rather than quantification in the collection and analysis of the data which in this case is Ofeimun's Nigeria the Beautiful' . This essay analysed the text to show the poet's art in showing colonialism and its effects on the people, the driving force of the British imperialist and also reject the narratives of the imperialist concerning the people. This essay concluded by saying that the poet uses his poetry to retell the story of the people and that poetry is an important tool that says action in people.
