ABSTRACT

It is the aim of this work to investigate the phenomena of archaic and modern linguistic usage in the Uneme language community. We argue in this work that there is intrusion of second language; hence there is a decline in the linguistic system of the members of the community, which is a characteristic of language change particularly among the modern Uneme language users.

We collected our data using the Ibadan 400 word list. Data was collected through a structured interview method from competent speakers of Uneme language and also from younger speakers.

The theoretical frame work that was adopted for this investigation is known as Contact Linguistics; which emerge work from the work of Uriel Weinreich(1953) this frame work was adopted because it is considered to derive changes that occurs in languages as a result of languages in contact. At the end of this work we observed that the Uneme language is undergoing a lot of changing in all aspect although we restrict out finding to phonological and morphological level of change. This we see from our examination of the archaic forms and modern form of the Uneme language.
