ABSTRACT

This research study aims to assess the competencies of Quantity Surveyors (QSs) in Benin City, Nigeria, with a specific focus on their proficiency in risk management within the construction industry. The study's objectives are to identify required competencies, evaluate risk management strategies, identify challenges in implementation, and suggest measures for competency enhancement. The construction industry in Nigeria faces various risks, making effective risk management crucial for project success. Quantity surveyors play a vital role in this process as they oversee cost estimation, procurement, and financial management throughout construction projects. Data collection involved a survey methodology, using questionnaires. Findings reveal that QSs require competencies such as leadership, planning, and sound judgment for effective risk management; they predominantly use historical data, qualitative analysis, mitigation, and periodic reporting for risk management; their excessive dependence on historical data poses a challenge, and the qualitative method's limitations in recording risks and actions are noted. Recommendations include government policy support for compliance, continuous professional development for QSs, enhanced collaboration among construction professionals, and a collective commitment to implementing suggested measures. The study reveals that there is room for growth for QSs in improving their risk management competencies, particularly in embracing modern risk management practices and interdisciplinary collaboration. The study's outcomes will benefit various stakeholders, including QSs, project managers, contractors, clients, regulators, and policymakers, by improving project outcomes, reducing project failures, and enhancing stakeholder confidence.
