ABSTRACT

This project presents a comprehensive geophysical exploration utilizing the seismic refraction method to investigate subsurface structures beneath the campus of the University of Benin, Nigeria. The University of Benin, located in the Niger Delta Basin, is prone to geotechnical challenges, including land subsidence and foundation instability. To address these concerns and improve our understanding of the subsurface, seismic refraction surveys were conducted. The seismic refraction method involves the generation of seismic waves at the surface, which travel through the subsurface layers and are recorded at multiple receivers. By analyzing the travel times and velocities of these waves, we can infer information about the subsurface geological layers and their properties. In this study, we detail the data acquisition process, including the deployment of seismic sources and receivers across the university campus. We also discuss the data processing techniques employed to extract valuable information from the recorded seismic data. The resulting subsurface velocity models and layer thicknesses provide insights into the geological composition, potential aquifers, and depth to bedrock. The findings from this project have significant implications for future construction and development within the University of Benin campus. By identifying potential geological hazards and assessing the suitability of subsurface conditions for various purposes, this study contributes to informed decision-making and sustainable development practices. Additionally, the methodology employed in this research can serve as a valuable reference for similar geophysical investigations in the region, offering a foundation for further exploration and research endeavors.
