ABSTRACT

GIS is a very important aspect of geomatics providing geospatial information and analysis from spatial data acquired from the earth surface. This project focuses on the use of GIS in traffic management. The Ugbowo – Lagos road is a major highway in Benin city with a very high traffic along the road throughout the week. This research aims at using GIS to make key routing decisions along the highway to prevent being held up on the highway due to its high traffic.

The GIS software adopted for this research is the ArcGIS Software. The basic tool used in this project is the ArcGIS Network analyst tool.

Traffic data was also acquired along the ugbowo – Lagos highway as historical traffic data for the network analyst to provide the best and optimum solution and also to understand the traffic on the highway.

The Traffic along the Ugbowo – Lagos road shows a high traffic in the morning (from 8:00am – 10:00am) and reduces in the afternoon (11:00am – 2:00pm) and rises in the evening (from 3:00pm – 5:00pm).

The route solution computed by the ArcGIS network analyst provided the best route to get to the destination when avoiding the traffic on the highway.
