ABSTRACT

The electricity distribution network of any region is now done in modern times using GIS and this helps in Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in the area of planning, monitoring, analysis, storing and retrieving of information of the geo-database of the electrical facilities related to the area concerned. The purpose of this research work was to utilize Geographic Information System as a tool in creating an electricity distribution network map that will aid in quick and easier access to the location of the facilities in the study area which is Oluku community of Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Benin city, Edo State. The methodology adopted in carrying out this work include acquiring the satellite imagery of the study area from google earth software and then carrying out ground-truthing by physically acquiring the coordinates of the electrical facilities on site using TRIMBLE R8 GNSS Receiver. The data collected is then geo-referenced, processed and digitized using arc-GIS software to produce the electrical distribution map of the study area.Features such as the location of the transformers, electric poles and the buildings were also captured during the course of the work. The result of this work include the creation of the electricity distribution network map of the study area showing the electrical facilities present, the map of customer’s connectivity to the distribution network and the map of the electricity distribution map superimposed on the satellite image.
