ABSTRACT
The data access system of most electronic healthcare records systems are still very primitive, restrictive and vastly non confidential, which hinders the delivery of effective and efficient care to patients. The use of blockchain technology in electronic health records systems to enable confidential data access can be a potentially radical step forward to improve the state of electronic health records systems data access . Blockchain technology is a relatively new technology that aims to provide an efficient way of maintaining a single verifiable state among different entities without the need of a trusted party. This project proposes a solution called Merkle, which uses Blockchain technology and asymmetric cryptographic system to ensure confidential data access. It relies on the availability and the widespread usage of healthcare data standards such as Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and SMART on FHIR. Based on Merkle, we develop a proof of concept (POC) and analyse the POC to ensure it effectively solves the problem. . The analysis results show that Merkle can effectively satisfy the security requirements in data access.
