ABSTRACT

The incidence of insect pests and its impact on crop production is a widespread problem. These insect-pests attack plants from seedling stage up till fruit formation, hence the need for development of effective and non-toxic control measures which will not only be eco-friendly but also pose no danger to human health. This study was carried out to investigate the potentials of aqueous leaf extracts of Lantana camara L. and Dieffenbachia seguine (Jacq.) Schott. to manage field pests attack on leaves of two varieties of Okra. Seeds of Okra were collected from NIHORT, Ibadan, Nigeria. Two aqueous concentrations (50g/L and 70g/L) of each plant extracts were prepared and applied to leaves of Okra plant in the field six (6) weeks after planting. Daily visit to the field was done to observe the common pests. Records of plant growth parameters like germination, plant height and stem girth was taken. Two common pests recorded were flea beetle and leaf hopper. Attack of pests on plant variety one (1) and two (2) were mild and severe respectively. The application of plant extracts of Lantana camara and Dieffenbachia seguine in different concentrations to Okra plants in experimental field had varying effect on the incidence of field pests. Overall, the plant extracts used in this experiment had a positive effect on the Okra plant as it reduced field pest attack, thereby allowing the plants to thrive.
