ABSTRACT

The study assessed the effect of water pollution at two (2) different sites of Ikpoba River in the brain and gills of Tilapia fish. A total of fifty two fishes were collected from two different sites every week for twelve (12) weeks and known weight of the selected organs were taken for enzymes assays. The study recorded the decrease GPx, SOD and catalase activity in the tissue/organs of the fishes in different sites when compared with the control. This study revealed from the analysis results that high metals are causing oxidative stress in fishes which manifested as alterations of antioxidant enzyme activities. The present study suggests treatment of the waste being dumped into the water ways.
