ABSTRACT

Monoon longifolium (Ashoka) is a loft evergreen tree, native to India and other tropical countries and has been known to possess anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. The aim of the study is to identify the antimicrobial properties of Monoon longifolium leaf extracf on some selected clinical isolates. antimicrobial investigation of aqueous extract of the leaf of Monoon longifolium against panel of clinically significant isolate namely Escherichia coli, klebsella, staphococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa. Samples of the leaves were collected from the back of Audithorium university kf benin. Sensitivity test was done on the leave using the test organisms to check for minimum zone of inhibition and susceptibility test was done on the leave. The aqueous extracts of the leaf of Monoon longifolium were subjected to microbial susceptibility assays using disc diffusion method and the sensitivity test was done  using well diffusion method. The results of the susceptibility test by disc diffusion essay revealed significant antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extracts of the leaves against the pathogen tested. The sensitivity test using well diffusion method gave a significant inhibitory zone at 500mg/ml for klebsiella and a moderate zone of inhibition at 250mg/ml for all isolate. The findings provide supportive evidence for the use of Monoon longifolium in traditional medicines.
