ABSTRACT

Medicinal use of A. vera traces back to ancient literature of many countries. The biological activities of A. vera are due to the synergistic action of a variety of compounds, among these compounds, anthraquinones are the most important active ingredient of high medical values The research was carried out to assess the antimicrobial properties of Aloe vera against some selected pathogens. The bacterial isolates used were characterized and identified using morphological, biochemical methods and sugar fermentation test. Following the cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics of bacteria, The isolates obtained were Pseudomonas sp Enterobacter sp. The isolated bacteria from tomatoe samples were the isolates used in for the antimicrobial study. The antimicrobial sensitivity test was carried out using agar well method. The various zones of inhibition was measured in millimeter. The result obtained showed that the aloe vera back had inhibition zones against pseudomonas sp from 25% concentration with value of 2.5 to 6.5 mm and also against Enterobacter with values of 2.3 to 8.0mm. the aloe vera back was a better antimicrobial agent compared to the gel which only had activities at 100% concentration. Chloramphenicol was used as the control, however it inhibited the growth of both isolates just like the back extract of aloe vera.
