ABSTRACT

The name Aloe vera is derived from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true”. The plant Aloe vera has a history dating back to biblical times. It is a perennial succulent xerophyte, which develops water-storage tissue in the leaves to survive in dry areas of low or erratic rainfall. The plant has stiff grey-green lance-shaped leaves containing clear gel in a central mucilaginous pulp. Benefits associated with Aloe vera have been attributed to the polysaccharides contained in the gel of the leaves.  Aloe vera belongs to the family Lilacea . Aloe vera contains over 75 nutrients and 200 active compounds, including vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignins, anthraquinones, saponins, salicyclic acid and amino acids. Herbal medications in particular have been a revival of interest due to perception that there is a lower incidence of adverse reaction to plant preparation compound to synthetic pharmaceuticals. The microbial medium was prepared and used according to the manufacturers’ directions and specifications by weighing 20g of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA)  into a Beaker bottle and then 500ml of distilled water was added into it and then shook very well, the top of the bottle was covered with a foil paper to avoid contamination, then it was autoclaved (120°C for 30min), then allowed to cool down, it was poured into Petri dish under a bursen burner to avoid contamination, this media was kept aside to solidify. The main objective of study was that to examine the  antifungal  activity of Aloe  vera on  fungi. Zone  of  inhibition  method used to check the  antifungal activity in  experimental  study.  The  concentrations  (5mg/ml, 10mg/ml, 150mg/ml and 20mg/ml) of gel  extract to inhibit the  growth fungi. The zones of inhibition were observed for Aspergillus niger, Saccharomyces cereviseae and Candida albicans .This study observed that Aloe vera plant significantly inhibited the growth of the tested fungi.
