ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus remains a global health concern with increasing prevalence, necessitating innovative approaches to its management. This abstract summarizes the potential antidiabetic effect of Andrographis paniculata ethanol extract on crucial biochemical parameters—urea, creatinine, triglyceride (TAG), and lipase. The study explored the impact of Andrographis extract on these parameters in three distinct groups: normal control, diabetic control, and diabetic treated. In the diabetic control group, elevated TAG levels were observed, indicative of dyslipidemia commonly associated with diabetes. Notably, the diabetic treated group exhibited a trend toward reduced TAG levels, suggesting a potential beneficial influence of Andrographis extract on lipid metabolism in diabetes. Furthermore, elevated urea and creatinine levels, markers of kidney function, were evident in the diabetic control group, reflecting potential renal impairment. However, the diabetic treated group demonstrated a stabilizing effect on these markers, hinting at a possible renoprotective role of Andrographis extract in diabetes management. Moreover, lipase activity, critical for lipid metabolism, was heightened in both diabetic groups compared to the normal control. Notably, the diabetic treated group displayed a moderate reduction in lipase activity compared to the diabetic control group, signifying a potential regulatory effect of Andrographis extract on lipid metabolism in diabetes. These findings underscore the potential of Andrographis paniculata ethanol extract as a complementary therapeutic option in diabetes management, particularly in mitigating dyslipidemia and preserving renal function. However, further comprehensive clinical investigations are ix imperative to substantiate these effects, ascertain optimal dosages, and determine safety profiles, thereby advancing its potential role in addressing the multifaceted challenges of diabetes.
