ABSTRACT

Carica papaya is an important medicinal plant used all around the world to cure a variety of illnesses including dengue fever, inflammation, and skin infections. In this study, the antibacterial activity of Carica papaya leaf extract was determined. The crude extract was obtained from the dried powdered leaf through filtration using water as a solvent. Agar well diffusion technique was used to assay for the antibacterial activity. The result revealed that the extract was active against the bacteria tested (E. coli, Pseudomonas, and S. aureus). The zone of inhibition ranged from 8.00±0.00 mm to 19.33±0.47mm. The minimum inhibitory concentration ranged from 62.5mg/ml to 350mg/ml and the minimum bactericidal concentration was 1000mg/ml for S. aureus and E. coli. The test organisms exhibited antibiotic resistance. The study's findings supported the use of the plant traditionally in medicine; therefore, further research in pharmacology, toxicology, and probable isolation of the plant's therapeutic antibacterial for drug manufacturing and illness therapy is needed.
