ABSTRACT

In examining the socio-economic relations between the United States and Nigeria from 2015 to 2022, it becomes evident that while both countries faced unique challenges and opportunities, their interactions underscored a complex interplay of geopolitics, economic dynamics, and socio-cultural factors. Through a comprehensive analysis of various facets, including trade relations, foreign policy stances, developmental initiatives, and societal transformations, this case study sheds light on the nuanced nature of state-to-state engagements in an increasingly interconnected world.1

Throughout the period under review, the United States and Nigeria maintained a multifaceted relationship characterized by a blend of cooperation and divergence. Economically, the two nations navigated a landscape marked by shifting global trends, technological advancements, and fluctuating commodity prices. The United States, as a global economic powerhouse, exerted considerable influence on Nigeria's economic policies, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and development assistance. Meanwhile, Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy and most populous nation, sought to leverage its natural resources and demographic dividend to bolster its socio-economic prospects, often engaging with the United States to pursue mutually beneficial partnerships.2
