ABSTRACT
With increasing cases of diabetics worldwide, more and more researches are being done to know the effect of various compounds on the condition, despite the awareness on diabetics in the medical world it is still one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The aim of this research is to provide new ground for further researches on the effect of ethyl-acetate leaf extract of Annona muricata on glucose concentration and liver function in streptozotocin induced diabetic Wistar rats, as well as to ascertain the effect. Fasting blood sugars, biochemical assays, evaluation of enzymes to ascertain liver condition are some of many methods through which results were gotten. 50 Wistar rats randomly divided into five groups with 10 rats each with average weight between 120-200grams with the weight of those in a group being representative of the weight range of the rats of the rats. The rats were fed ad-libitum with the feed and clean tap water during the entire 8 week course of this study. The group 1 which was the control group were not induced, no treatment also was given. The group 2 which was the negative diabetic control were induced with a single dose of streptozotocin (40mg/bw) and no treatment was administered. Group 3 rats were positive control group were induced with a single dose of streptozotocin to induce diabetes this group was treated with standard diabetes drug Metformin (25mg/bw) administered orally for 14 days. Same process was followed for group 4 but this time this group was treated with 250mg/bw of Annona muricata and extract administered orally for 14days. Group 5 were treated with ethyl-acetate leaf extract of Annona muricata (500mg/Bw) and administered also for 14days. A p value of less than 0.005 (P< 0.05) were statistiscally significant. The usage of metformin and ethyl acetate extract of Annona muricata leaf considerably (P<0.05) improved blood glucose control when compared to the diabetic control group, according to the study's fasting glucose data. Therefore, phytochemicals present in Annona.muricata leaf extracts are useful for preventing hyperglycemia.
