ABSTRACT
Technology as it stands now controls the world, this advancement has led to the advent of AI (Artificial intelligence) technology. This technology was developed by scientist to ease the human effort and to increase speed of carrying out daily activities in their different endeavours. Based on this, this study was undertaken to analyze the role of natural language processing in automated fact-checking: a study of AI-driven accuracy and trustworthiness in news reporting. This study was anchored on the Technological determinism Theory and the Modernisation Theory. Thus, the survey research method was adopted for the study with effective use of a well-structured 18-item questionnaire to elicit responses from journalist in Benin city, in order to ascertain their perception of the role of natural language processing in automated fact-checking: a study of ai-driven accuracy and trustworthiness in news reporting. The data generated was analyzed using, simple percentages and presented using tables. Findings reveal that Natural language processing has promoted automated fact-checking by significantly increasing the speed of news production in many media organization Benin city. The study also shows Journalist in Benin City, are yet to decipher whether AI fact checking specifically natural language processing has enhanced the credibility level of their organisations or not. From the outcome of the study, it is also revealed that Journalist believe that there will be more threat to individuals privacy rights, considering its ability to carry personal information during fact checking process without any form of authorization. As a way of recommendation, this study suggests that Government agencies in charge of media and journalism in Nigeria, should organize seminars for journalist to further enlighten them on how to properly use natural language processing in automated fact-checking. The study also suggested that, Courses such as digital journalism should be added to the curricula in journalism school in Nigeria, to prepare journalist ahead. Lastly, Media organisations in Nigeira, should do well to acquire AI tools and invite professionals to give them the right knowledge on how to use the technology, so that they can match up with media organisations in western countries.
