ABSTRACT
In the year 2015, a monumental decision was made by the leaders of the world which was the adoption of Agenda 2030 and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. All the members of the United Nations collectively endorsed these multifaceted goals which were to cover every aspect of life. The aim of these goals could be broadly subdivided into ensuring peace, progress and prosperity for the people of the planet for the next 15 years. The Sustainable Development Goals were crafted with the imperfections that derailed their predecessor, the Millennium Development Goals well noted and apparently taken into consideration to ensure that these issues do not arise to militate against these goals. Thus, a better means of implementation was used. Despite this, certain issues continue to clog the wheel of progress of the SDGS eight years after its adoption. However, one thing has been obvious for all to see, the varying levels of progress made by different countries and as with all matters of international regard, the progress made is directly proportional to the way and manner in which the particular country applies the international law. Some countries just incorporate without making any efforts to apply, others make shoddy efforts towards application while some countries make proper efforts and achieve great progress in the application of these laws and regulations which in this case would be the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, this article shall focus directly on two things, a general review of the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals and an analysis of the impact of diverse national policies on the individual progress of nations with regards to SDG implementation. This essay shall be divided into five chapters. The first chapter shall be a general introduction to this essay, it shall detail the intricacies such as the scope, aims and research methodology to be used. The second chapter shall analyze the concept of Sustainable Development, with a history of the concept and the factors necessitating the formation of the goals discussed. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals themselves will be analyzed in detail in this chapter. The third chapter shall review the global progress made in the application of the goals from their inception till now. This shall be segmented into three divisions an analysis of the years before the pandemic (2026-2019), the impact of the pandemic which was at its peak during 2020 and an analysis of the Pandemic recovery years (2021-2023). Chapter Four will delve into the subject matter proper, offering an analysis of how the diverse laws of different countries affect their progress in the implementation of SDGs. It shall employ the use of case studies, these case studies shall be the following countries; Finland, Nigeria, U.S.A, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. Afterwards a comparative analysis shall be used to estimate the effect their diverse laws have had on their progress. Chapter five offers a general conclusion of the project, findings and recommendations.
