ANALYSIS ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN PREPARING STUDENTS IN AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT

 

This study investigates the effectiveness of Vocational and Technical Education in preparing students for careers in Automobile Technology at the University of Benin. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study comprised fifty (50) students enrolled in Vocational and Technical Education programs related to automobile technology, and ten (10) representatives from the automotive industry.

     The research instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled "Effectiveness of Vocational and Technical Education in Preparing Students for Careers in Automobile Technology Questionnaire (EVTESCATQ)." The instrument for data collection was subjected to face validity by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach's alpha statistical tool, yielding an alpha value of 0.86. The study employed statistical methods including mean, standard deviation, and two-sample independent t-tests to investigate the effectiveness of vocational education in preparing students for careers in the automotive industry.

     Findings indicated that coursework and practical training have a significant influence on students’ career choices and employability in the automobile industry. Internships and industry experience were shown to provide essential skills for students, contributing to both short- and long-term career benefits. The study also found that automobile technology positively affects economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. Recommendations include strengthening industry partnerships, improving practical training facilities, and integrating emerging automotive technologies into the curriculum to better prepare students for the evolving industry.
