ABSTRACT
This study examined the analysis of verb and adverbial phrases, their uses and problems in contextual grammar among English undergraduates in the University of Benin.
The survey research design was used for this work. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. Questionnaire was designed and used for data collection. A total number of three hundred students (respondents) were used for the study. The Data collected were analysed using simple percentage.
Based on the findings, it was discovered that students find it difficult to identify adverbs without “ly” suffix, Students are not quite familiar with the classes of adverbs, Students also find it quite difficult to use Adverbial phrases in sentences correctly and the unpredictable nature of adverbs poses a problem to them as a second language learner.
Therefore, adverbs, Verbs and their phrases, the problems of their contextual usage can be reduced by in-depth study of them with copious examples. Thereby enhance more mastery and efficiency in the field of Grammar.
