ABSTRACT

Spot speed study is crucial in the development of traffic and highway engineering since the data obtained from this study required for establishment of speed trends, traffic control planning, accident and geometry design. The Aim of this study is to evaluate the spot speed of vehicles along Lagos-Benin expressway in the Ugbowo axis of Benin city, Edo state. Using the spot watch method of determining spot speed an interval of 90m length of roadway along Isihor, Ugbowo – Lagos Road in Benin city was selected as the study area and peak hour is avoided to assure the accuracy of the study. The study revealed that approximately 50% of the vehicles plying the Ugbowo – Lagos Road at the time of the study, travel at a pace ranging between 55 – 82 km/hr., similarly it was observed that majority of the drivers move within a speed limit of 61 km/hr. Which is within the acceptable speed limit as compared to the posted speed limit of 100 km/h. the operating speed of the observed vehicles was seen to be 85 km/hr. (85th percentile speed). However, strengthening on law enforcement, as well as other possible and useful options, shall be taken in order to reduce the probability of accidents to happen. This study will be beneficial especially for the use of transportation planning in the nearby area. it has also demonstrated how rapid and affordable the stopwatch method is for performing spot speed assessments on Nigerian roads. It is envisaged that the findings would lead to a national design standard that will help two-lane highway designers and planners improve the geometric design elements' consistency.
