ABSTRACT

Every organisation’s success greatly depends on its human resources because; human resources are the major assets of the organisation that drives growth and development. The reviewed literature affirmed to the fact that training and development of employees is paramount and should be placed in high esteem if organisations wish to achieve maximum productivity and hit the highest level of success. This research work was designed to analyse the training and development of workers in primary health care centres. This study titled “Analysis of training and development of workers on healthcare system in primary health care centres (A case study of Oredo local government area, Edo State) attempts to find out whether primary healthcare workers are often exposed to relevant training and development programmes and to also know whether training and development is improving the performance and attitude of employees and if there are possible reasons why trainings are not effective. This is to better inform appropriate policy formulation to enable performance and work attitude improvement, and therefore the development of more evidence-informed and sustainable training and development programmes for primary healthcare workers. Relevant data were collected from both primary and secondary sources for this research work. Quantitative method was used for this study and the instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The total population of workers in primary health care centres in Oredo local government area of Edo State is 237 out of which questionnaires were randomly distributed to and retrieved from a sample size of 118.  Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the questionnaire data and chi-square was the statistical tool used in testing the validity of the hypothesis. The research revealed that though primary healthcare workers are exposed to training and development programmes, it’s usually not often. Among the major findings of the research work was that training and development programmes improve primary healthcare workers performance and work attitude and primary healthcare workers are very receptive to training. Therefore, the research recommended that primary healthcare workers should be given trainings often, especially trainings on how to use technology to improve their jobs and also training needs should be constantly studied to implement relevant trainings and there should be regular follow-up to analyse training effectiveness.
