Specifically, the study determined to find out the nature and the standard of the available facilities and the study will equally investigate other determinants of success in sports. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted the National Athletes, coaches, Physical Educators, sports administrators, organizing secretaries and stadium/facility managers in University of Benin sports complex.
The instrument used for the study was a self-developed and structured questionnaire which was administered to a total of one hundred and fifty respondents and they were selected through the simple random sampling technique and the stratified random sampling technique for the study. The questionnaire was validated by three specialists in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, Benin City. The reliability of the study was established to be 0.84 using the test-retest reliability method. The result from both administrations was subjected to the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC). The obtained data were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. A 100% return rate was recorded after the administration of the questionnaire. The data was computed using Statistical Package for Social Scientist (SPSS) Software.
The findings of the study indicated that sports facilities and equipment will have a significant effect in determining success in some selected competitive sports in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended that sports facility as a permanent variable in this study should be provided and the available ones be utilized maximally for success in sports performance. Adequate measures should be taken against vandalization and poor maintenance of public sports facilities.
