ABSTRACT
This study examines and analyzes the pronunciation errors present within the corpora of FunkeAkindele's character, Jenifa, in the popular Nigerian TV series 'Jenifa's Diary'. Pronunciation errors play a significant role in both language acquisition and communication and these errors can occur due to various factors such as native language influence (L1 interference), regional accents, or lack of exposure to the target language. It also investigates and analyzes the types of errors present within her corpus throughout the series paying close attention to selected episodes, particularly episodes in seasons 1-6 of the show. The work employs the qualitative research method, the ‘Error Analysis’ theory is used as the framework for the analysis of the data collected. Data collection is carried out by attentive viewing of the earlier listed episodes of the series. The researcher watched these videos, taking notes of the types of errors present in the speech production of the subject in focus to understand and subsequently be able to carry out an in-depth analysis of how and (to a lesser extent) why these errors occur. The findings of the research reveal that the subject makes a litany of phonological errors (including/especially errors of substitution), errors in the placement of stress, and syntactic errors (errors in the formation of sentences) and these errors, influenced by interference from her L1, affect language acquisition and proper intelligible communication.
