ABSTRACT

This work analyses the relevance of theatre management in the theatre business with a focus on the accurate delivery of the principles of management, creating a consciousness of adequate managerial skill and technical know-how for the enhancement of the theatre, and recognizing theatre management as a field of specialization. A profitable and successful business may not be possible without efficient management. In this sense, the survival of a business unit in the present competitive world is possible only through efficient and competent management. "The output of the organization translates the vision, dedication, and integrity of managers and further determines whether there is management or mismanagement" (Drucker 1974). This study is anchored on various theories propounded by scholars and how they could be applied for optimum productivity. The survey research method was adopted, using questionnaires as the instrument for data collection from 100 respondents. Findings reveal that the majority of the respondents are of the opinion that theatre management is a core element of theatre business, considering the operations it carries out, especially as the unifier of other aspects of the theatre. It also reveals that with the accurate application of management principles, theatre managers will be able to actualize the predetermined aims and objectives of their institution. It concludes that respondents reveal that theatre management is abdicating as a result of theatre managers who lack the skill and technical know-how required to carry out management functions. This study therefore attests that theatre management is the engine room, the life wire of the theatre, emphasizing the vitality of managers role as the flag bearers of the theatre and providing them with a more professional, expert, and well-prepared guide for the discharge of their tasks since the principles of theatre management lay the groundwork for a manager to create an effective organization in which creativity can thrive in the theatre.
