ABSTRACT
The study assessed the analysis of the implication of unconducive classroom environment on effective teaching and learning in the department of Adult and Non Formal Education, University of Benin, Benin City. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the Study. The population and Sample size of the study was made up of 516 and 52 from 100 level to 400 level. In the department of Adult and Non Formal Education. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire titled "An analysis of the implication of unconducive classroom environment on effective teaching and learning in the department of Adult and Non Formal Education" Simple percentage method of data analysis was used in analyzing the data gotten from the respondents. The findings in the study revealed that features such as comfortable and accessible classroom environment, proper lighting, a classroom fitted with latest technology are features of classroom in which the environment will be conducive. Also, the availability and accessibility of educational technology will enhance student academic performance, teachers teaching methods, communication approach, classroom management can contribute to students academic performance and the layout of classroom can contribute to students academic performance. Overcrowding of students in the classroom, poor lighting and ventilation, inappropriate seating arrangements, noise level from outside, dirty and inadequate maintenance of the classroom environment can affects students learning ability to focus and provision of comfortable and accessible classroom, creating of safe classroom environment where the students can express themselves, arrangements of classroom materials, visual aids, appropriate lighting and temperature in the classroom and orderly and well-arranged classroom can help in improving classroom environment for effective teaching and retention of academic content. Based on the findings, the study recommended that conducive classroom and large capacity lecture room that can accommodate the number of students enrolled should be provided, the government should also provide necessary infrastructure facilities, chairs, tables, electricity and textbooks in other to improve teaching and learning also, use of multimedia such as images, audio record, power point presentation and other relevant medium need to be enhanced and encouraged in the classroom.
