ABSTRACT

The products produced from petroleum are highly flammable and commonly stored in underground tanks where they are retailed via meter pumps. It can be said from a general overview of the environment today that the lack of strict control by the appropriate agencies and noncompliance by the petroleum dealers to laid down rules and regulations have led to the indiscriminate siting of gas stations in most urban areas in Nigeria. It is worrisome the ways and manners gas stations are sandwiched within residential neighborhoods in Nigerian urban centers.

The research work analysed the environmental and planning issues of the location of gas stations in Yaba Local Government in Lagos State with the view of determining the compliance or level of compliance of the gas stations with planning standards. This was done using questionnaires, direct observation and interviews. One hundred and fifty housing unit were selected at random around the selected gas stations, that is 5 housing units were sampled to talk about the effects of the gas stations on them and the environment which was a good representation of my sample size (150). They were within 100m radius of the gas stations.

Also gas stations and other related agencies were visited to get additional informations. Findings showed that the location of some of the gas stations in the study area may be in an area which could be susceptible to hazards or disaster and improper regulations and planning standards would lead to problems affecting the everyday life of man.
