SUMMARY

The results of the present study revealed that freshwater actinomycetes of Ologbo River appear to have immense potential as a source of antimicrobial properties. The isolate of primary screening when subjected to secondary screening showed different activity from that of primary screening. Some of the active isolates did not show the activities in the secondary screening while some showed little activity and some showed improved activity. According to Bushell (1977), during the screening of the novel secondary metabolites, actinomycetes isolates are often encountered which shows antibiotic activity on agar. The result of primary and secondary screening revealed that most of the active isolates were active against gram negative bacteria than gram positive bacteria. There was not any scientific report on aquatic actinomycetes producing antibiotic in the study areas. Therefore, isolation and screening of actinomycetes from Ologbo river in optimum condition may contribute the discovery of new antibiotics. Potent antibiotics from these actinomycetes could contribute a lot to fight against antibiotic resistant pathogens. Selected isolates have been shown strong antimicrobial activity against resistant pathogens. Further purification, structural elucidation and characterization are recommended to know the quality, novelty and commercial value of these antibiotics.
