ABSTRACT

This study was designed to appraise the effects of socio-cultural factors on women participation in sports in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, University of Benin. A total of fifty (50) respondents(females) of Human Kinetics students from 100 level to 400 level in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, University of Benin participated in this cross-sectional study. Instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher. It was validated by experts in the field of Human Kinetics and Sports Science. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the response of the respondents to the research questions raised.The findings revealed that the effect of socio-cultural factors on women participation in sports   in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science includes physiological make-up, family background, religion, cultural belief and social factors. The data from the study also showed that cultural belief influences women participation in sports positively. It also revealed that Human Kinetics females agreed that physiological make-up has no hindrance to their participation in sports. The data further showed that family background has no influence on women participation in sports. This study therefore concluded that women should participate in sports as much as the men does in the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science in the University of Benin.
