ABSTRACT
The research examines the residential location choice of residents in Benin City, Edo State. The research was carried out using primary data gotten from 300 copies of questionnaire administered to residents in Benin City. Descriptive statistics that include cross tabs, frequency distribution table, means, percentages and chart was used. Multiple regression was also used in analysing the data. The study found that, that proximity to work (28.4%) was used more by respondents as the reason of choosing the particular zones they live, followed by nearness to family with 19.3%, then followed by proximity to city center with 12.5%, also followed by both closeness to children and good security with 8% each and the least reason used by respondent to choose the zone where they live is good quality of infrastructure with 3%.
The study also found out there is a significant relationship between educational qualification and time taken to get to work by car and; residential location choice in Benin. That is, these two independent variables greatly and strongly influences reasons why respondents’ in Benin City decides to live in a specific neighbourhood. And also that household size, ethnic group, level of noise pollution, monthly income, household employment structure, household accessibility to ring road by car), type of employment, neighbourhood security, marital status, drainage system, nature of street, annual rent, distance to ring road, impact of flood, religious group, and choice of living in neighbourhood information all made less contribution to residential location choice in Benin City. That is, respondents in Benin City respondents use theses less significant determinants of residential location in choosing their residences where they live but not as often as they use the significant determinants of residential location which include education and time taken it taken to get to work by car.
