ANALYSIS OF PRINCIPAL EFFECTIVENESS AND TEACHERS JOB PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study examined principal effectiveness and teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Delta State. To achieve the purpose of the study, five (5) research questions were raised, two (2) were answered while three (3) were turned into hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research based on correlational type was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of two hundred and fifty-six (256) school principal and three thousand and twenty seven (3027) teachers from two hundred and fifty six (256) public secondary schools in Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State. Samples of twenty six (26) principals are three hundred and three (303) teachers from twenty six (26) public secondary schools in senatorial district using the purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used to collect data for the study were two (2) set of questionnaire. The first questionnaire was titled: Principal Effectiveness Questionnaire (PEQ), while the second one was titled: Teachers Job Performance Questionnaire (TJPQ). He PEQ was used by the teacher to rate the principals’ effectiveness while TJPQ was used by the principal to rate the teachers job performance. The study revealed the following; the level of principal effectiveness in public senior secondary schools in Delta State was high with a mean of 3.06, the level of teachers job performance in public senior secondary schools in Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State was high with a mean of 3.26, there is a significant relationship between principal effectiveness and teachers job performance in public senior secondary schools in Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State, there is no significance difference in relationship between principal effectiveness and teachers job performance in public senior secondary schools in Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State based on gender and there is no significant difference in relationship between principal effectiveness and teachers job performance in public senior secondary schools in Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State based on experience. The following were recommended as follows The principal should sustained the high level of effectiveness in school through discipline and transparency, the high level of teachers job performance should also be sustained through training and retraining of teachers in schools and the school principal should be involved in seminars and workshop on issues of management of school in order to enhance their effectiveness by acquiring new skills for teachers motivation and job performance.
