ANALYSIS OF FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS PARTICIPATION IN SPORTING ACTIVITIES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS USING UNIVERSITY OF BENIN AS A CASE-STUDY

ABSTRACT

 

          The study was carried out to examine the analysis of factors influencing students participation in sporting activities in tertiary institution using University of Benin as case-study. Random sampling techniques were used in the study. In order to carry out this research, some questions were raised. The descriptive survey design as used for this study. The population of the study comprised of ….students. a sample size of 200 was used for the study. Data collected from the participant was analyzed using tables and interpreted by means of both qualitative and quantitative analysis method. Some of the major findings include the majority of students in the sample schools have less interest to participate in physical education class, cultural, Biological, last experience economical, physical and physiological factors are major factors that hinder the participation of students in sports.

          The research instrument used for the study a self-structured questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was subjected to scrutiny and the test- retest method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The data was analyzed using frequency and percentage count. The result revealed that sociological and motivational factors are the major factors that prevents women from participating in sports.

          In conclusion, the need for students to participate actively in sports will be highly appreciated in our society today. It is recommended that these students are motivated to participate in sport and as such all factors which prevent participation be eliminated or reduced.
