ABSTRACT
This study investigated student dropout rate in public secondary schools in Edo state between 2017/2018 to 2020/2022 academic session The study also investigated dropout rate incidence among male and female students, significant influence of socio-economic background on students dropout rate, significant influence of peer group on students dropout rate in secondary schools, significant influence of work life balance on dropout rate in public secondary schools and significant influence of academic performance on students dropout rate in public secondary schools in Edo State. To carry our this study, Six (6) research questions were raised , questions one and two were answered while four were hypothesized and tested at alpha level of 0.05. The study revealed related literature and based it on theoretical framework of general deviance theory.
The study which was a descriptive adopted ex-post facto research design. The population of the study was 21, 663 students that enrolled between 2017/2018 to 2021/2022 academic session in public secondary schools in Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 21,663 being enrollment was used as sample to determine the actual rate of dropout in the academic session studied. Purposive sampling was used. Two instruments were used; one was checklist while the second was a questionnaire Data was collected using a structured questionnaire titled Secondary school Student dropout questionnaire (SSSDQ. Data collected was analyzed and results presented. The study further shows that; The rate of secondary school students’ dropout in Edo State is low The dropout rate of the students in secondary school based on sex is between 1-3 percent.
It was recommended amongst others that: Strategies must be put in place to prevent high dropout incidence and the socio-economic background of students should be considered when strategizing on measures to prevent dropout incidence. Also, policy aimed at addressing dropout rate completely should be formulated
