ANALYSIS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN PUBIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IKPOBA OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated analysis of classroom management practices in public secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Four researcher questions was formulated to guide the study. The questions bothered on teacher’s classroom management practices, the predominant teacher’s classroom management practices, teachers teaching styles and how it focus on the needs, interest and concern of the individual learners and the positive reinforcement provided by the teacher to help student for appropriate behavior in public secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.  

          Descriptive survey method of research was used in this study. The population of the study consists of all the teachers in public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State which have three hundred and twenty five (325) public senior secondary Schools teachers. (Source: Edo State Ministry of Education, 2020). Self-structured questionnaire was used as instrument for the study. The instrument was title “analysis of classroom management practices in public secondary schools”.

Based on the findings, it was revealed that most teachers has institutionalized practices in directing their students guided by the various sets of rules and procedures, disciplinary interventions teacher student relationship inside the classroom. A good classroom practice help the teacher to see the importance of laying down clear class room rules and discipline and they practice being friendly optimistic and open minded to ease the burden of classroom management. This study also revealed that there were classroom management problems met such as inattentiveness disobeyed rules and procedures and uncontrolled behaviour of student despite the clear consequences. The study conclude that there are various dimension that can be used inside the classroom by teachers, and positive reinforcement provided by teachers to help student for appropriate behaviour is a necessary key in classroom management practices. In line with the findings it was recommend that the department of education should conduct trainings or seminal workshop along classroom management to enhance the expertise or capabilities and teachers must utilize appropriate strategies and design activities that will engage students in a task that disruptive behaviour will be minimized.
