ABSTRACT

The body goes through a series of modifications after death.Although the process of decompositio n is rather orderly, it can be sped up or slowed down by a number of external influences and innate qualities. In order to more correctly estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) and offer a time frame during which death happened, it is advantageous in forensic studies to understand frequent postmo rtem alterations and the factors that cause them. This study analyzed the cations concentration in the aqueous humour of bovine, caprine and porcine at different post mortem intervals. A total of 30 pairs of healthy enucleated male and female bovine, caprine and porcine eyes from freshly slaughtered cows, goats and pigs were used. At the different intervals of (0, 4, 8 and 24 hours), the aqueous humour was carefully aspirated from the enucleated eyes and the cations (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) concentration was estimated using standard biochemical techniques. The data obtained from this study was analyzed using the spearman correlation as processed by statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. In this study there was no significant difference observed in comparing the concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium for bovine, caprine and porcine aqueous humour at different PMI for male right and left eyes (p>0.05) with that of the concentration of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium for the female right and left eyes (p>0.05). In conclusion, there was no significant differences observed in the concentration of the male and female eyes of bovine, caprine and porcine aqueous humour with increasing post mortem interval.
